The Hidden Demands of Policing: How Officers Manage Growing Stress When we think of police officers, we often picture the uniformed figure rushing to the scene of a crime or maintaining order during public events. But what many don’t realise is that policing is far more diverse, complex, and emotionally demanding than these images suggest. From responding to traumatic incidents to managing mental health crises, all while coping with shrinking resources and increased public scrutiny, the modern police officer faces pressures that most people rarely consider. In my latest article, I draw from 28 years of experience in the Metropolitan Police to explore the growing expectations of this challenging profession and share strategies for managing the stress that builds up over time.
